The Aquarium is best known as an aquarium, exactly as its name would suggest. But it is really more of a "Palacio del Mar" or Sea Palace, with one part devoted to aquariums and another part, just as important, set aside for Natural Science and Naval History.
The Museology section administers the heritage gathered by the Oceanography Society of Guipúzcoa ( Sociedad Oceanográfia de Guipúzcoa or SOG) since its foundation in 1908 to the present day, which was transferred to the Oceanographic Foundation of Guipúzcoa, created by the SOG, in 2002.
