 PRESENTATION AND GOALS

Professors Ángel Borja (Fundación AZTI. Donostia-San Sebastián) and Michael Collins (Southampton Oceanography Centre (SOES). Southampton. United Kingdom) are to lead this course scheduled from September 6 through 10 at the Donostia-San Sebastián Aquarium. (Plaza Carlos Blasco de Imaz, San Sebastián). The course is organised in collaboration with Fundación Azti, Fundación de Oceanografía de Gipuzkoa and the Southampton Oceanography Centre.
Information has been gathered over the past 25 years on the estuaries, coast and coastal platform of the Cantabrian Sea and the Bay of Biscay. This information includes studies on biology, chemistry, geology and physical oceanography. Recently these extensive multi-disciplinary investigations were brought together in a book entitled 'Oceanography and Marine Environment of the Basque Country', edited by A. Borja and M. Collins (the course leaders) and published as part of the Elsevier Oceanography Series.
The course sets out to:
(a) provide a summary of the main scientific discoveries made over recent years in the areas of oceanography and the marine environment.
(b) discuss the findings in regional and global perspectives by means of presentations by international experts from various areas of specialization.
The course will give students up to date information on the subject and provide them with a broader view of the state of the environment in the Bay of Biscay.
